Feast of the Black Nazarene - Other scenes

This is the last part of my posts about the feast of the Black Nazarene last Jan 9th. (My main post about that here)

Of course, since this event is a fiesta (the biggest one for that matter), there are many people who have their activities to mark this important occasion. Some would do it with parties, others with music and other activities. During the feast, there's always interesting and unusual scenes in Quiapo, but then again, Quiapo is an interesting district, even outside of fiesta days. This post will show other fiesta scenes, aside from the main aspects of the feast.

Typical sight during fiestas: a band

Of course, fiestas have become opportunities for people to make money. During the feast and the days leading to it, all over the place, people are selling items related to the devotion of the Black Nazarene, from images to shirts. Here are some of them.

Towels

Religious images

Handkerchiefs, with prayers

Shirts and prints

Posters of the Nazareno

More shirts
One of the stranger scenes during the feast were these people from some religious sects trying to get followers. These guys, who were at Plaza Miranda were dressed up in costumes of biblical personalities and saints. They were doing acts such as faith healings and other unusual scenes, hoping to get people to their sects. I have to say, it's a funny scene but seriously, I think they shouldn't be doing these and similar acts, especially in front of a church. Maybe in another place though.

This costume is rather elaborate...

Anyways, that's pretty much all I'll be posting about the feast of the Black Nazarene. Hopefully, I'll come again for the feast next year. Until then...

Short Walk in Binondo

Last Jan 17, after class, I went to Binondo in Manila before going home. I will admit, it is another one of my fave districts in Manila because of its ambiance and many other things. It could be because of the food, or their church, or the history and what the place is like. It is Manila's Chinatown and the Chinese culture is evident. This was just a short walk and I can see some preparations for Chinese New Year. Here are a few pics from my walk.

Feast of the Black Nazarene 2014 - Other Images

One of the most common sights during the Feast of the Black Nazarene are the many images and replicas of the Senor Nazareno all over the place. At almost every corner whether it is in the vicinity of Quiapo or on the procession route, there would be people with their own religious images, big and small, some elaborate and others, simple. In fact there was a procession for these replicas and images two days before the feast (Here are my posts for it: Part 1 and 2). Many people venerate these images as well, like the original image. Here are some of my pictures, don't use without permission.

Feast of the Black Nazarene - The Traslacion

It's been over a week since the feast of the Black Nazarene. Today, I'll be posting pictures from the Traslacion, the moments I was there near the andas at Lawton and the area of the Liwasang Bonifacio, before the procession went to Jones bridge. This grand procession is considered as the highlight of the feast, but there really is more to the feast day than just this. It seems like when this feast is featured, the procession seems to get the most (if not all the) attention in coverages. It's always an amazing experience to see this event, especially in person.

Here are my pics from the procession. Don't use without permission:

A closer look shows that one of the rays of the Nazareno's halo is missing

Devotees climb up the andas, guarded by the hijos.
Thousands, some carrying banners follow the Andas

Devotees managed to move those massive containers. Good thing nothing too bad happened.

Hundreds of thousands at Lawton, Manila
